“One who enters the Way with a sense of shame,
Holding an alms bowl to bring blessings to sentient beings—
Why would they indulge in worldly desires,
And sink down into the five senses?
Having already abandoned the five desires,
Casting them off without looking back,
How could one want to take them back again,
Like a fool who eats his own vomit?
All desires bring suffering when sought,
Much fear and dread when obtained,
Sorrow and distress when lost;
In none of them is there any place of joy.
Such are the perils of all desires;
Having rebuked them and been able to abandon them,
One attains the bliss of meritorious dhyāna concentration
And is no longer deceived by them.”
