“Arise, do not lie embracing a dead corpse,
A mere nominally designated person of various impurities!
Like one stricken with a grave illness, an arrow piercing the body,
When all painful sufferings converge, how can you sleep?
Like one bound and being led to execution,
When catastrophe is imminent, how can you sleep?
The thieves of the defilements are not yet destroyed, the harm not yet removed,
Like sharing a room with a venomous snake,
Or like facing a battle amidst naked blades—
At such a time, how could you sleep?
Sleep is a great darkness in which nothing is seen,
Daily deceiving and robbing people of their clarity.
With sleep veiling the mind so that nothing is seen,
Facing such a great loss, how can you sleep?”
