Furthermore, if a practitioner in past [lives] cultivated and practiced various dhyānas and samādhis in terms of phenomena and principle, although they had not yet attained realization and fulfillment, because they had already cultivated and practiced them, when their wholesome roots in the present life ripen, relying on the cultivation of stopping as a condition, all of them unfold and develop. This is also the manifestation of wholesome roots from habitual causes. It is analogous to when the Buddha called out, 'Welcome (ehi)!', whereupon the undefiled immediately manifested, and the three knowledges and eight liberations were simultaneously perfected. The discernment of both-defiled-and-undefiled, up to neither-defiled-nor-undefiled, can be known by similar analogy.
