2. Explaining the arising of benevolence conditioned by dharmas: within a calm, concentrated mind in the desire realm or the anāgamya stage, one suddenly realizes for oneself that all internal and external [phenomena] are merely the dharmas of the aggregates (skandhas) and sensory bases (āyatanas); when arising, it is only dharmas that arise, and when ceasing, it is only dharmas that cease, seeing no sentient being, self, or what belongs to self, but only the five aggregates, and within the aggregate of feeling there is pleasant feeling. Having known this, one then conditions this pleasant feeling to give rise to the absorption of benevolence, without anger or resentment, without enmity or vexation, vast and immeasurable, pervading the ten directions. This is benevolence conditioned by dharmas. Or compassion conditioned by dharmas arises, and similarly up to joy and equanimity, just as with the signs of the arising of the wholesome roots of benevolence.
