2. Explaining the arising of the wholesome roots of recollecting the retribution Buddha: within a calm, subtle mind in the desire realm or the anāgamya stage, one suddenly recollected: 'The true, perfect retribution bodies of the Buddhas of the ten directions are calm and constantly abiding, pure in form and mind, subtle and quiescent, with merits and wisdom filling the Dharma realm. Unborn and unceasing, uncreated and unconditioned, how could there be birth in a royal palace, nor is there cessation beneath the twin trees? In order to transform sentient beings, they universally respond with birth and cessation across the Buddha lands of the ten directions. Merits such as these are immeasurable, boundless, and inconceivable.' When reflecting in this way, the mind is concentrated, serene, and stable, samādhi develops, and insight and understanding are clear. Or in concentration one sees inconceivable realms of the Buddha-dharma, whereupon immeasurable vows and practices, immeasurable merits, and immeasurable Dharma gates of wisdom and samādhi are produced. These are the signs of the arising of the wholesome roots of recollecting the retribution Buddha.
