Second, explaining the treatment for half-clear, half-dull vitarka and vicāra: the symptoms of the disease are as explained before. Now the method of counteraction should teach them to follow the breath. Following the breath in and out, the mind constantly relies on the breath. Because it relies on the breath, when the breath is coarse, the mind is coarse, and when the breath is subtle, the mind is also subtle; as the subtle breath goes out and comes in, connecting the mind to condition upon it can shatter vitarka and vicāra. When the mind is calm and clearly discerning, knowing the breath going out and coming in, its length and its courses, its illuminating function distinct, it can shatter torpor. Therefore, following is said to be the remedy. If one only counts the breath, there is the fault of reinforcing torpor. If one only contemplates the breath, there is also the flaw of floating distraction; it would not be called an adept counteraction.
