Second, explaining the treatment for the arising of the disease of delusion calculating existence and nonexistence: perverted thinking reflects on having a self or lacking a self, having aggregates or lacking aggregates, etc., as explained before. To establish the counteraction, one should teach the contemplation of the twelve links of dependent origination of karmic retribution. The twelve links of dependent origination of karmic retribution: contemplating the present time of the kalala, it is named ignorance, and so on up to birth, old age, and death. In the present, the five aggregates, twelve sense bases, and eighteen elements are already accomplished, all born from causes and conditions. At this time of the kalala, there are already three things: first, life; second, warmth; third, consciousness; hence it is called ignorance. Since this is born from conditions, it has no self-nature: it cannot be called existent, nor can it be called nonexistent; and so on up to old age and death, it is also like this. If one knows it is neither empty nor existent, one shatters the two views of emptiness and existence. One should know that the contemplation of the twelve links of dependent origination of karmic retribution treats the disease of views of existence and nonexistence; now one can also use this counteraction to shatter the delusion of grasping at provisional composition through causes.
