Fourth, establishing the method of settling the mind in terms of sequence: once obstacles are removed, there are practitioners who wish to progress from the shallow to the deep and cultivate all dhyānas and samādhis to completion. One should teach them breath-counting through ānāpāna; after realizing the fundamental four dhyānas and formless absorptions, next teach following the breath; after realizing the sixteen sublime practices, next one should [teach] observing the breath; fulfilling the dhyāna of penetrating clarity, next teach the contemplation of impurity, entering dhyānas such as the nine notions and the liberations, up to next observing the nature of the mind and entering the nine kinds of great dhyāna. The sequence of dhyānas and absorptions is entirely as described above.
