Second, properly explaining the methods of curing illness: having understood deeply the origins and arisings of illness, one should employ methods to cure it. The methods of curing illness are indeed many; to speak of their essentials, they do not exceed five kinds: first, curing illness through breathing, namely the six kinds of breath and the twelve kinds of breath. What are the six kinds of breath? First, chui; second, hu; third, xi; fourth, he; fifth, xu; sixth, si. These six kinds of breath are all produced through skillful modulation of the lips and mouth: during meditation, when cold one should blow (chui), and when hot one should exhale (hu). In curing illness, chui expels cold, hu expels heat, xi expels pain and treats wind, he eliminates agitation and lowers the qi, xu disperses phlegm and resolves fullness, and si tonifies exhaustion. If treating the five viscera, the two breaths hu and chui can treat the heart, xu treats the liver, he treats the lungs, xi treats the spleen, and si treats the kidneys.
