Fifth, curing disease through contemplation and analysis: by using correct wisdom to examine that the disease being experienced is completely ungraspable, the disorders of the four great elements will naturally dissolve and disappear. If the disease is caused by ghosts and spirits or through Māra, one should apply a resolute mind, supplemented by dhāraṇīs and practices such as contemplative illumination to assist in curing it. If it is a karmic disease, one must supplement [treatment] by cultivating merit, repenting, and chanting and reciting [sūtras], whereupon the affliction will naturally vanish. Among these five methods of curing disease, if a practitioner skillfully grasps even a single principle, he can practice it for himself as well as help others—how much more so if he is fully accomplished and thoroughly versed in them! If one does not know even a single one of them, then when afflictions arise there will be no cure; not only will one abandon the cultivation of correct karma, but there are also concerns regarding one's very life—how could one practice oneself or teach others? For this reason, whoever wishes to cultivate dhyāna must skillfully understand the internal mind's methods for curing disease. The methods of curing disease with the internal mind are manifold; how could they all be transmitted in writing? If one wishes to study and know them, one should further seek out and inquire into the principles set forth above; this merely indicates their general import. If one merely relies on this text, since the text is brief and incomplete, it is feared that it cannot be relied upon definitively. If a wise person skillfully grasps its meaning, adapting expediently, then even in a place where there is no good spiritual friend, this will suffice as a provisional means to deal with an emergency.
