First, explaining the name: coming after the first dhyāna, it is called the second dhyāna. Having abandoned vitarka and vicāra, one attains the virtues of superior factors in the second mind, hence it is called the second dhyāna; it is also called the samādhi without vitarka and without vicāra. Why? Attaining the intermediate dhyāna, one severs vitarka; with the arising of inner purification in the second dhyāna, one severs vicāra; it is also called the absorption of noble silence. Because the speech of vitarka and vicāra is extinguished, it is called silence. Because one enters this absorption having attained undefiled correct wisdom, it is called noble silence; in the Bodhisattvabhūmi (Dichi lun), it is called the 'dhyāna accompanied by joy,' because when this absorption arises, it arises together with joy.
