Second, regarding the shifting of conditions: initially counting the breath, when one perceives the breath becoming subtle, one should set aside counting the breath and simply follow the breath, letting it flow naturally in and out. If the mind tends toward stillness, one then abandons following and concentrates the mind to bring it to a halt. If the mind becomes dark and negligent, one then quietly illuminates the material breath. If the mind becomes agitated and scattered, one then abandons contemplation and returns to counting, following, and stopping; therefore it is called "turning back." The mind does not run wild, condensing the spirit and quieting contemplation; therefore it is called "purification." If a practitioner can skillfully gather and regulate [the mind] in this way, the mind will easily settle into absorption.
