There are another eight sensations, namely: first, restlessness; second, pliancy; third, cold; fourth, heat; fifth, floating; sixth, sinking; seventh, hardness; eighth, softness. Although these eight sensations are similar in character to the previous ones, when analyzed finely they are not without minor differences; their designations are set out separately, and added to the previous ones they combine to make sixteen sensations. When these sixteen kinds of sensations manifest, all have wholesome dharmas and meritorious virtues as retinue, as explained earlier under the movement-sensation. Because the practitioner, based on anāgamya, manifests such various sensations, meritorious virtues, and wholesome dharmas, it is called the initial manifestation of the first dhyāna. These are all pure four great elements of the form realm manifesting in reliance upon the body of the desire realm; hence the Mahāyāna treatises say that the four great elements and derived matter of the form realm attach to the body of the desire realm.
