First, specifically explaining the characteristics of the five factors: What is called vitarka? Vitarka is named tactile vitarka, and is of two kinds: first, vitarka that accomplishes dhyāna; second, vitarka that ruins dhyāna. Just as there is wind that can produce rain and wind that can ruin rain, it is as explained above: when among the sixteen sensations, a sensation has a retinue of ten wholesome dharmas of peaceful security and adornment, this is the vitarka that accomplishes dhyāna, as explained above; when a sensation has twenty unwholesome dharmas, this is the vitarka that ruins dhyāna. Furthermore, vitarka belongs to the body faculty; because the body has sentience and is different from wood and stone, vitarka arises in correspondence to touch. As the sūtras explain the meaning of seeing, hearing, sensing, and knowing: seeing belongs to the eye, hearing belongs to the ear, smelling and tactile sensing belong to the body, and knowing belongs to the mind, and also corresponds to the tongue because of its augmented function.
