Now, discussing the fundamental, correct absorptions of the form realm, they are said to be only four. If one includes the expedient means and the intermediate [dhyānas], then it is variable. Followers of the Sarvāstivāda say that there are the anāgamya and intermediate dhyānas, adding them to the four dhyānas to make six stages of absorption. Followers of the Dharmaguptaka generally do not speak of the future [anāgamya] dhyāna, but speak of desire-realm absorption and intermediate dhyāna, taking them to be six stages of absorption. What the Mahāyāna [Treatise] and Ghoṣaka explain fully includes the desire-realm [concentration], anāgamya, and intermediate dhyāna, adding them to the four dhyānas to make seven stages of absorption. These should be harmonized and understood through reason.
