Second, clarifying contemplative dissection and practice: within the fourth dhyāna, the practitioner should think: 'My present absorption relies on the desire-realm body complete with form dharmas; why do I not see them?' Having had this thought, they should single-mindedly and attentively contemplate all the pores and the nine orifices of their own body, [seeing that] the space elements within the body are all hollow and sparse, just like silk gauze, with inside and outside communicating with each other; and also like a plantain tree, layer upon layer without reality. When performing this contemplation, they immediately see it. Having seen it, they again attentively contemplate with their mind, seeing the body like a sieve, like a steamer, like a spider's web, gradually turning into minute particles until the bodily parts are entirely exhausted, seeing neither the body nor the five faculties and so on. Just as the internal body is exhausted, external form is also like this. Why? Because all form dharmas of the four subtleties and four great elements of the internal body are not different from all form dharmas of the four subtleties and four great elements of external bodies.
