What is called a mind accompanied by benevolence? As the Explanation Treatise states: "When one is mindful of sentient beings in the ten directions so as to cause them to attain happiness, the factor that arises among the mental factors is called benevolence." Being concordant with goodness, when desiring to enter dhyāna absorption, one should first make a vow: "May all sentient beings experience happiness, and may I completely perceive sensation, perception, volition, and consciousness within absorption." These are called mental factors. The harmonious combination of all bodily actions, verbal actions, and conditioning factors non-concomitant with mind is entirely called benevolence. These factors all take benevolence as their principal, and therefore it gets the name benevolence. For example, although all mental factors are the causes and conditions for future lives, yet volition alone gets the name because volition is the most powerful among the production of actions; such is called the characteristic of concordance with benevolence.
