Answer: When practicing the mind of loving-kindness, one cherishes sentient beings just like newborn infants, mindfully wishing to give them happiness. Emerging from the samādhi of loving-kindness, one still sees sentient beings experiencing diverse sufferings; with deep cherish and affection, one wishes to eradicate their suffering and bring them peace and happiness. Just as happiness comes first and joy follows later, with compassion placed between them, sympathetic joy is therefore not listed immediately after loving-kindness. For example, a mother, though constantly mindful of her child to bring them peace and happiness, is not yet said to have joy; later, seeing the child fall ill, her mind is distressed and pained. Once the illness is cured and the family estate is entrusted to the child, she rejoices greatly; for this reason, sympathetic joy is explained after compassion.
