Answer: In dhyāna, absorption is valued; a mind of happiness (sukha) is tranquil and peaceful, which supports absorption, and is therefore superior. In the immeasurables, the mind focuses on sentient beings; taking the delight and joy of sentient beings as its object is superior, and is therefore subtle. Furthermore, since the practitioner's initial absorption is shallow, they only focus on sentient beings with happiness (sukha). Why? If they were to take the sign of joy (prīti), their mind would scatter and be difficult to gather. Later, as the focused samādhi gradually deepens, even though they leap with joy, their mind is not scattered; therefore it is subtle.
