Answer: The practitioner contemplates: 'When all sentient beings are freed from suffering and attain happiness, losing it is itself suffering, and all of it involves distress and trouble; when they attain neither-suffering-nor-happiness, their minds are secure, without misfortune from beginning to end.' Because equanimity brings abundant benefit, the merit obtained is also great. Furthermore, when the practitioner has the mind of loving-kindness and sympathetic joy, sometimes a mind of affectionate attachment arises; when practicing the mind of compassion, sometimes a mind of sorrow and grief arises. Because of craving and sorrow, their merit and virtue are meager. Entering this mind of equanimity removes these faults of craving, and they are free from all afflictions; one should know that practicing equanimity yields exceedingly great merit. Furthermore, the practitioner within the mind of equanimity is able to perform diverse acts that benefit sentient beings; therefore their merit increases. The brief explanation of the immeasurable mind of equanimity is concluded.
