First are those who delight in the lofty, superior, and sovereign, seeking to become Brahmā kings; therefore, although they have attained the four dhyānas, they further advance to cultivate the immeasurable minds. Why is this? The four dhyānas are merely of the form realm, where one's own practice is complete, but the virtue of benefiting others is slight and shallow. If born in those heavens, one cannot rule as king. If one cultivates the four immeasurables, focusing upon sentient beings of the ten directions to enter samādhi, universally gathering them in loving-kindness and compassion, the mind to benefit others is vast, and therefore the merits become all the greater. If born in those heavens, one will surely become a Brahmā king, ruling with sovereignty; therefore, although able to attain the four dhyānas, they still further cultivate the four immeasurables.
