First, regarding the merits in the present life: As the Buddha said in the Āgama: 'If one enters the samādhi of the mind of loving-kindness, in the present life one attains five kinds of merit: 1. Entering fire, one is not burned; 2. Struck by poison, one does not die; 3. Weapons do not harm one; 4. One never meets an untimely death; 5. Wholesome spirits protect one.' Because one benefits immeasurable sentient beings, one attains immeasurable merit.
