Now distinguished in terms of cultivation and realization, there are twelve gates: (1) cultivating counting; (2) corresponding with counting. First, cultivating counting: the practitioner harmonizes the breath so that it is neither rough nor slippery, and serenely and slowly counts from one to ten, collecting the mind on the count without letting it run astray; this is called cultivating counting. Second, corresponding with counting: one becomes aware that the mind functions spontaneously from one to ten without applying effort, and the mind and breath abide on their own.
