First, someone says: "These sixteen practices, including ānāpāna, correspond to the four applications of mindfulness." If explained in terms of the four applications of mindfulness, one should know that they are fully present only in the desire realm, the anāgamya, and up to the first dhyāna. If one wishes to reach higher stages, it is not that one cannot, but the contemplation procedures are somewhat incomplete. For instance, in the fourth dhyāna, since there is neither in-and-out breathing nor joy and bliss, if one explains the applications of mindfulness in terms of the breath and joy and bliss, it would be inconvenient. The higher and lower can be understood by analogy.
