Ninth, causing the mind to rejoice: this corresponds to the joy of internal purity of the second dhyāna. Why is this? The joy of the second dhyāna arises from internal purity, but lacking the illumination of wisdom, it is mostly experienced with attachment. Now contemplating this joy, one immediately knows it to be deceptive and does not give rise to experiential attachment; knowing according to reality gives rise to Dharma joy, which is also called the awakening factor of joy. Since true Dharma joy arises in the mind from correct contemplation, it is called causing the mind to rejoice.
