Now, to clarify the mundane, there are three types: first, the fundamental mundane, which is the primary retribution of the five aggregates for a single lifetime; second, the principle mundane, which is knowing that the fundamental dharma is interconnected with the principles of all external phenomena; third, the phenomenal mundane, which is seeing all categories of sentient beings and worldly events when the five supernormal knowledges arise. Since there are three kinds of the mundane, the supramundane in contrast to the mundane also comprises three kinds. Why is this? Because sentient beings' faculties are unequal—inferior, middling, superior, sharp, or dull. Therefore, although they equally realize this first dhyāna, their realms are shallow or deep and truly differ. Thus one must differentiate the distinctions in realizing the first dhyāna according to these three meanings.
