First, the marks of the initial manifestation. When the practitioner manifests the first dhyāna, they suddenly see that the ninety-nine thousand pores of their own body are empty and porous, and breath enters and exits through the pores all over the body. Although the mind's eye clearly sees it entering and exiting throughout the body, in entering there is no accumulation and in exiting there is no dispersion; in coming it traverses nowhere, and in going it steps upon nothing. One then sees the thirty-six bodily components within the body, each distinct and clear. The thirty-six components are: hair of the head, body hair, nails, teeth, thin skin, thick skin, sinews, flesh, bones, marrow, spleen, kidneys, heart, liver, lungs, small intestine, large intestine, stomach, bladder, gall bladder, feces, urine, grime, sweat, tears, nasal mucus, saliva, pus, blood, blood vessels, yellow phlegm, white phlegm, dried mucus, fat, grease, and brain membrane. Of these thirty-six components, ten are external items and twenty-six are internal items; twenty-two are earth items and fourteen are water items. Having seen the characteristics of wind, water, and earth clearly, one further senses each item being boiled and cooked by heat, the characteristic of fire being clear. One contemplates these four great elements as like four vipers dwelling together in a single basket; the natures of the four poisonous vipers are each distinct. It is also like a butcher dividing meat into four portions, contemplating the four portions as unrelated to each other. The practitioner is likewise, and their mind is greatly startled and awakened.
