When the practitioner first attains the fulfillment of the vitarka factor, he perceives that the body and breath are unreal, just like a plantain tree. Now, attaining this resting in one mind, the samādhi factor is fulfilled. When the mind is tranquil, and subsequently becomes subtle and obliterated, he then perceives that the marks of the body and breath are unreal, just like a cluster of foam. This is a brief explanation of the characteristics of a practitioner of lower faculties realizing the penetrating clarity of the first dhyāna.
