Second, explaining the counteracting [functions] of the nine notions: Once the practitioner has become proficient in cultivating the nine notions, he must augment the notions and repeatedly cultivate them, making the practice of contemplation seasoned and keen. Whenever he contemplates, the mind immediately accords with concentration; the thought of the notions holds the mind without scattered thoughts. This can break the six lusts and eliminate worldly greed and love. The six lusts are: first, lust for colour; second, lust for bodily form; third, lust for deportment and posture; fourth, lust for speech and voice; fifth, lust for fine smoothness; sixth, lust for human appearances. From among these six lusts, six kinds of attachment can arise.
