Fourth, explaining how the nine notions lead to the Path: There are two ways of cultivating the nine notions. If one cultivates according to phenomena, this can only subdue the fetters of the desire realm, and later one separately cultivates the ten notions to sever [the defilements of] views and thoughts, attaining the path of the arhat. Second, if one skillfully cultivates the nine notions, the ten notions are immediately complete within them; entering principle through phenomena, one need not bother to cultivate the ten notions by separate recourse to other gates. Why is this? For example, when the practitioner contemplates a person at the point of death, their movement and speech suddenly cease in an instant, their body swells, rots, and disperses, each undergoing transformation—this is impermanence. If one attaches to this body, when it is destroyed by impermanence, that is suffering. If impermanence and suffering lack autonomy, that is non-self. Because it is impure, impermanent, suffering, and non-self, the world cannot be delighted in or attached to; one contemplates the body in this way.
