Fourth, "recollection of the precepts": the practitioner should recollect, "These precepts can ward off all evils and are a peaceful dwelling place." Herein the precepts are of two kinds: namely, defiled precepts and undefiled precepts. Furthermore, there are two kinds: first, prātimokṣa precepts; second, dhyāna-concomitant precepts. The prātimokṣa precepts can ward off all evils so that the body attains peace; the dhyāna-concomitant precepts can ward off all afflictions so that the mind attains inner joy; the undefiled precepts can destroy the root of all evils—ignorance—so that one attains the bliss of liberation. When I cultivate such a Dharma, of what should I be afraid? By single-mindedly recollecting them, terror is immediately eliminated.
