First, regarding what is called sequential stages: among the various dharmas taught by the Buddha, there are three kinds of paths: first, the path of seeing; second, the path of cultivation; third, the path of the adept. Now these ten notions elucidate the sequential stages with reference to these three paths. Why is this so? A person who destroys [afflictive] phenomena has already mastered the nine notions on the stage of dry wisdom and subdued the fetters; now cultivating the three notions of impermanence and so forth constitutes contemplation of general characteristics, in order to shatter the sixty-two views and all inverted dharmas, enter into the path of seeing, and attain the first fruit.
