Now we clarify that undefiledness is of two kinds: first, counteractive undefiledness; second, principle-conditioned undefiledness. Thus the Mahāsaṃnipāta Sūtra says: "There are two kinds of practice: first, wisdom practice; second, activity practice." "Activity practice" refers to the counteractive undefiledness of the nine notions, liberations, and so on; relying on phenomena to give rise to practice, it counteracts and shatters all defilements, and is therefore called the undefiled practice of activity practice. Second, "wisdom practice" refers to the correct contemplation of the true emptiness of the four truths and the twelve links of dependent origination; relying on principle to sever delusions, it is therefore called the undefiled practice of wisdom practice.
