The "six wondrous gates" are indeed the root of inner practice and the essential path by which [practitioners of] the three vehicles attain the Way. Thus, when Śākya[muni] first approached the tree of awakening and sat cross-legged upon the grass, he internally contemplated ānāpāna: first, counting; second, following; third, cessation; fourth, contemplation; fifth, turning back; and sixth, purification. Through this, the myriad practices unfolded, and he subdued Māra and attained the Way. One should know that the Buddha serves as a model for sentient beings; since he demonstrated his traces in this manner, how could the correct practitioners of the three vehicles not travel this same path?
