Furthermore, what is called the śrāvaka's characteristic of counting the breath? The practitioner wishes to quickly escape the three realms and seeks nirvāṇa for oneself, and therefore cultivates counting the breath to regulate the mind. At that time, within counting the breath, one does not deviate from the correct contemplation of the four truths. How does one contemplate the four noble truths within counting the breath? The practitioner knows that the breath relies on the body, the body relies on the mind, and the coming together of these three things is called the aggregates, sense realms, and sense bases. The aggregates, sense realms, and sense bases are suffering itself. If a person craves and clings to the dharmas of the aggregates, sense realms, and sense bases, and even follows the mind of views to discriminate the dharmas of the aggregates, sense realms, and sense bases, this is called the origin. If one can penetrate the true nature of the breath, one can know that suffering is unarisen, not giving rise to the four receptions, with the four practices not arising, so that the dull fetters, sharp fetters, and various defilements and entanglements are tranquil and do not arise; therefore it is called cessation. The correct wisdom that knows suffering can penetrate the truth without obstruction; therefore it is called the path. If one can count the breath in this way and penetrate the four truths, one should know that this person will certainly attain the path of the śrāvaka, ending the old and creating no new.
