Second is reciprocal realization. This discusses the characteristics of realization in terms of the four wondrous gates: the third, according with convenience; the fourth, remedying; the fifth, mutual subsumption; and the sixth, universal contemplation. Why? Because in these four wondrous gates, the expedients of cultivation have no fixed order, and therefore the realizations likewise reciprocally vary without fixity. For instance, when a practitioner is counting breaths, if the sixteenth touches and other dark realizations, obscurity, non-definition, defilement, and so forth arise, this dhyāna is the essence of the characteristics of realizing the counting of breaths, yet now it is not fixed. Or there may be a practitioner who, while counting breaths, sees the pores of the body as hollow and open, thoroughly seeing the thirty-six components [of the body]. One should know that while counting breaths, he realizes the gate of following.
