Question: The ten suchnesses of the dharma-realms of the six sense faculties of sentient beings are all impermanent; since the Buddha possesses them, should they also be impermanent? Answer: The sūtra says: "As for that eye faculty, in all Tathāgatas it is eternal, completely cultivated without reduction, seen clearly and distinctly. Up to: that mind faculty, in all Tathāgatas it is eternal, completely cultivated without reduction, known clearly and distinctly." When the sūtra says "that," "that" refers to sentient beings; this means that sentient beings' six faculties are eternal in the Tathāgatas—how much more so that the physical eye and the other faculties possessed by the Buddha are not impermanent! The sūtra says: "What ordinary people know is called conventional truth; what the Tathāgata knows is called ultimate truth." Thus, although they identically illuminate one object, the object, depending on the illumination, has the distinction of ultimate and conventional; although they identically possess the six faculties, there is the difference of permanence and impermanence.
