Answer: Sentient beings, by cause and condition of the five turbidities, errantly calculate birth-and-death, taking it to be permanence, bliss, self, and purity, and arouse deluded afflictions, falling into the three destinies. If one were now further to tell them that their bodies are the tathāgatagarbha, permanence, bliss, self, and purity, it would increase their inverted delusions; by what means could they ever escape birth-and-death? People of the present day who practice emptiness are an example of this very thing. Why? When they fundamentally have abundant greed and the three poisons, upon hearing the sūtra say, 'Sensual desire is precisely the Way; anger and delusion are also like this; within such three dharmas, immeasurable Buddha-dharmas are fully equipped,' they do not penetrate this wondrous purport, but support their deluded minds and further multiply their confusions and inversions. How could it be spoken recklessly!
