Answer: These characteristics of the four movements of mind subsume all minds. For instance, when taking unwholesome phenomena as conditions, there are: prior to thinking of unwholesome phenomena, intending to think of unwholesome phenomena, thinking of unwholesome phenomena, and having thought of unwholesome phenomena. As when taking wholesome phenomena as conditions, there are: prior to thinking of the wholesome, intending to think of the wholesome, thinking of the wholesome, and having thought of the wholesome. When taking conditions such as the six sense-objects, all afflictions including the three poisons, down to walking, standing, sitting, lying down, speaking, eating and drinking, and all activities and deeds that are performed, each possesses the mind of the four characteristics as described above; and taking conditions of all mundane phenomena, each possesses the mind of these four characteristics. Therefore, we speak solely of the four kinds of characteristics as the objects of contemplation, leaving nothing unincluded.
