一、歸依佛。佛陀，秦言覺者，自覺、覺他，故名為佛。歸者，以反還為義，反邪師還事正師，故名歸。依者，憑也，憑心靈覺，得出三塗及三界生死也。故經云：「歸依於佛者，終不更歸依其餘諸外天神也。」

First, taking refuge in the Buddha. "Buddha" in the language of Qin is "Awakened One." Awakening oneself and awakening others, he is therefore named Buddha. "Taking refuge" (gui) has the sense of "turning around and returning": turning away from heterodox teachers and returning to serve the correct teacher, it is therefore called taking refuge. "Relying upon" (yi) means depending; depending with one's mind upon spiritual awakening, one is able to escape the three destinies and the birth and death of the three realms. Therefore a sūtra says: "One who takes refuge in the Buddha will ultimately never again take refuge in any other external gods."
