三、念清淨支。念者，愛念也。行者既得四禪真定，當念下地之過，念自功德，方便將養，令不退失，進入勝品，故名為念。亦云是四禪中有不動照了正念分明，故名念支。

Third is the factor of purity of mindfulness. 'Mindfulness' means affectionate mindfulness. Once the practitioner has attained the true meditative absorption of the fourth dhyāna, they should be mindful of the faults of the lower planes and mindful of their own virtues, employing skillful means to nurture them so that they do not regress and lose them, but enter into superior grades; hence it is called 'mindfulness'. It is also said: within the fourth dhyāna there is motionless, illuminating right mindfulness that is distinct and clear; hence it is called the factor of mindfulness.
