Third is the attainment of the base of nothingness. If one abandons the mind of the base of consciousness and enters meditative absorption relying on the phenomenon of nothingness, it is called the attainment of the base of nothingness. The practitioner reviles consciousness: the consciousness of the three periods of time is boundless, and taking many objects leads to distraction, which can destroy meditative absorption. Therefore, they abandon taking consciousness as the object and turn the mind to rely upon the phenomenon of nothingness. When the mind is associated with the phenomenon of nothingness, it is called the attainment of the base of nothingness. Some explain it as: abandoning the many consciousnesses and taking a small consciousness, focusing on it to enter meditative absorption, is called the attainment of the base of nothingness.
