5. Eliminating all bodily formations. When one who cultivates the superior stages wishes to enter the first dhyāna from the unarrived stage, one should constantly contemplate and analyze. Thus, if the dharmas of vitarka and vicāra of the first dhyāna arise, body and mind open brightly and clearly, just as a person with clear eyes opens a granary and naturally sees clearly everything inside the granary, discerning that all the realms realized are illusory, empty, and devoid of person or self. Since there is neither person nor self, who performs the various actions? Who receives the dhyāna-concentration? Thereupon the bodily actions arisen from inversion are all destroyed; hence it is said: 'eliminating all bodily formations.' Correlated with the bases of mindfulness, up to this point it still belongs to the contemplation of mindfulness of the body.
