Second, the step-over emergence samādhi. What is called the step-over emergence samādhi? Rising from the cessation of feeling and conceptualization, one enters the scattered mind; rising from the scattered mind, one enters the attainment of the cessation of feeling and conceptualization. Rising from the attainment of the cessation of feeling and conceptualization, one returns to dwell in the scattered mind. Rising from the scattered mind, one enters the base of neither-conceptualization-nor-non-conceptualization; rising from the base of neither-conceptualization-nor-non-conceptualization, one dwells in the scattered mind. Rising from the scattered mind, one enters the base of nothingness; rising from the base of nothingness, one dwells in the scattered mind. Rising from the scattered mind, one enters the base of consciousness; rising from the base of consciousness, one dwells in the scattered mind. Rising from the scattered mind, one enters the base of space; rising from the base of space, one dwells in the scattered mind. Rising from the scattered mind, one enters the fourth dhyāna; rising from the fourth dhyāna, one dwells in the scattered mind. Rising from the scattered mind, one enters the third dhyāna; rising from the third dhyāna, one dwells in the scattered mind. Rising from the scattered mind, one enters the second dhyāna; rising from the second dhyāna, one dwells in the scattered mind. Rising from the scattered mind, one enters the first dhyāna; rising from the first dhyāna, one dwells in the scattered mind. This is the characteristic of the step-over emergence samādhi of all Buddhas and bodhisattvas. If it is a śrāvaka emerging by stepping over, they can only emerge skipping one dhyāna, but cannot skip two, much less emerge by stepping over with autonomy. Within this, step-over emergence has three kinds: first, forward step-over emergence; second, reverse step-over emergence; third, forward-and-reverse step-over emergence. Adding the previous three kinds of step-over entry makes six kinds of step-over samādhi altogether, and it is in these six samādhis that the Tathāgata entered nirvāṇa. At this point, the explanation of the shared dhyānas of the practices of the three vehicles is concluded.
