The eleven cognitions are explained next after the three untainted faculties because the three faculties can generate the eleven cognitions. Why is this? The faculty of coming to know what is not yet known generates the cognition of phenomena and inferential cognition; the faculty of knowing generates the cognitions of suffering, the origin, cessation, and the path, as well as the cognition of the minds of others and conventional cognition; the faculty of having known generates the cognitions of exhaustion, non-arising, and reality as it is. Therefore, the eleven cognitions are explained next after the three faculties. They are collectively called 'cognitions' because they understand decisively; thus they are called 'cognitions.' When these eleven cognitions are produced, each clearly and distinctly illuminates in accord with its level; hence they are collectively called 'cognitions.'
