As for explaining the eighty secondary characteristics next after the thirty-two marks: marks and secondary characteristics are both form dharmas (rūpa), and both serve as adornments that make manifest the Buddha's body. However, marks are general while secondary characteristics are specific; if the marks lacked secondary characteristics, they would not be consummate. Wheel-turning kings, Śakra, and Brahmā also have marks, but because they lack the secondary characteristics, their marks are not subtle and wondrous. Therefore, following marks, secondary characteristics are explained. What is collectively called 'secondary characteristics' (anuvyañjana / hao) means lovely and pleasing. Because the body is adorned with the eighty secondary characteristics, all gods and humans love and delight in it, and thus it is called 'pleasing' (hao). That is to say, because he cultivates his body with benevolence, he possesses this physical karma of pure marks and secondary characteristics.
