The reason why the sixteen views and notions are distinguished after nāmarūpa, the skandhas, āyatanas, and dhātus is that among dharmas such as nāmarūpa, a personal self is fundamentally unobtainable. Yet those who have not seen the path all falsely impute a self and what belongs to a self within dharmas such as nāmarūpa. When the mind that imputes a self is briefly distinguished in accordance with circumstances, there are precisely sixteen distinct views and notions; if broadly contrasted with various conditions, then false imputations are innumerably many. Due to this inversion, all karmic activities of afflictions, birth, and death are fully aroused. Now, in order to clarify all contemplation gates, such as the twofold emptiness of persons and dharmas, later on, one must skillfully recognize designated and real dharmas; therefore, relying broadly on the Da zhidu lun, I explain them here.
