Fifth, the precept against drinking intoxicants. What is meant by intoxicants? There are three kinds of intoxicants: first, grain liquor; second, fruit wine; third, medicinal liquor. Whether dry or wet, turbid or clear, items such as these can agitate a person's mind and induce heedlessness, giving rise to the thirty-six faults. If one does not drink them, this is named the precept against drinking intoxicants.
