Fourth is the gate of contemplation. The mind that discriminates and investigates is called 'contemplation'. Although the practitioner realizes various meditative absorptions through stopping, understanding and discernment have not yet arisen. If one abides in the mind of meditative absorption, there is the error of ignorance and relish-attachment; therefore, one must scrutinize, examine, and analyze the meditative absorptions realized, and herein one mostly utilizes the real contemplation of the four bases of mindfulness. If the contemplating mind is distinct and clear, one knows that the five aggregates are deceptive and unreal, shattering the four inversions and the sixteen views and notions such as a self. Once the inversions are gone, the untainted skillful means will unfold because of this; therefore, contemplation is taken as a gate.
