The reason why the ten kṛtsnāyatanas are explained after the eight bases of mastery is that although the bases of mastery enable sovereign transformation in limited contemplation, it is not yet pervasive. Now, what is contemplated in the ten kṛtsnāyatanas is all-pervasive; therefore they are explained next. Thus the *Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa* states: "The liberations are the preliminary gate, the bases of mastery are the intermediate practice, and the kṛtsnāyatanas are the consummation." When the three kinds of contemplation are complete, that is the consummation of the essence of contemplative dhyāna. They are collectively named 'kṛtsnāyatana' (all places) because they take their name from the pervasive fullness of the object contemplated; they are also called the ten universal entries.
